Ed Zirkle
has a fine arts degree in Photograph and Cinema from The Ohio State
University. He started his career in photography as a photojournalist
and then went on to get a degree in fine arts. Having lived all over
these United States Ed learned to be a documentarian of life, seeing the
world around him, not just looking at it. While not a native of
Wilmington Ed has lived in and around North Carolina over the years and
enjoys the warmth and openness of the Wilmington residents.
His images have appeared in
Time, Newsweek, Business Week, US Magazine, National Geographic Special
Publications, AP, UPI, Better Homes and Gardens, Women’s Magazine, Ohio
Magazine and other major publications.
Though trained as a
photojournalist Ed is comfortable in a commercial studio working on client
products as well as providing portraits for family and friends. He
provides his clients the same insight for images as when he is working on
personal documentation projects.
As a member of National Press Photographers Association and the Ohio News Photographers Association Ed has won many local and national awards for his images. He was Education Chairman for the annual Ohio convention and is very active in promoting photography as an art.
Ed opened the first
photography gallery in Columbus, OH and worked on the revival of a 1930
Paramount movie theater in Mansfield, OH.
Ed has taught photography at The Ohio State University and Columbus State Community College and looks forward to teaching here in Wilmington.
As a master of the black & white image with a large or small format camera and in the darkroom Ed finds color to be a fun statement of life and enjoys capturing the bold and gentle colors of the Cape Fear region.
